Meetings

Life is a big corporation is meetings. We sit all days talking and listening to each other. Issues are discussed to death and revives when new players joins the meetings. Some like to hear themselves speaks, other keep their opinions to themselves. Have you heard of "passive aggressive" behaviour? It is agreeing in a meeting but not doing anything after. In an environment where everyone is nice to each other and has the diplomacy to say the right things in a group meeting, but not really agreeing or believing in the discussions.

Why passive aggressive behaviour is prevalent in large corporation? My theory is it is company's culture. If the company promotes, retains and rewards people who says the right things rather than bring the right results, the outcome will be everyone saying the right things to get ahead. In a big company where the responsibilities are divided, it is hard to account for one's results. Hence those who rise to the top have strong influencing and political skills. The key is to make sure you can leave the right impressions and not to offend anyone who can obstruct your career in the company.

It is not capabilities or results, it is who you know and who know you. Meeting is the place and time to cultivate relationships. So my advice for those who want to get promoted, brush up your diplomatic skills. You will get to the top one day.

Good luck!

Hmm,think it really depend on the types of industries and job scope. Some get promoted real quick by showing great results. Those who get to the top but didn't perform and has no capability will fall from grace.

Ah Ha! I say you will get to the top. I did not say you will stay there. I have worked for big companies in different industries. They are usually similar since you need to work with a lot of people, influencing skill is the key to success. You have at to get everyone to say yes to your proposal. One no set you back and you have to start all over again.
