I really hope the new Minster of Education can shift the obsession on grades and homework to more nebulous and hard to measure character building and values. Even Lee Wei Ling, daughter of our esteemed Former Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew also wrote about it last Sunday.
There is even a new upcoming book that show results of research on excessive homework actually reduces academic performance. This research is done in the Western countries. Singapore with high homework load has consistently rank at the top globally for Maths and Science score. It defies the research results!
Instead of one track or one size fits all, we will have diversity and success defined differently from straight As. Success in life is about family, helping others and living a good life. Material comforts are good and enjoyable but we should also have kind spirit and peaceful disposition.
