Unpleasant Surprise

Landing into Changi Airport, the first to-do was to call home. My Mother-in-law answered. She told me our bedroom is leaking water. It is serious. "Is it raining?" I asked. "No" she answered. I thought I heard wrong. How can water leaks if it is not raining. She says it is the water pipe. I exclaimed loudly. My wife retort I am always alarmed and loud. The leaks start at about 3pm in the afternoon. Thank God I was unreachable at that time. Otherwise the plane ride will be uncomfortable. Very uncomfortable indeed.

When we reached home, the water was still leaking. I have to turn off the mains. The leak was from the roof garden down to the stairwell and the bedroom in 3rd floor. What a nightmare! We called the developer. It is stressful. The damage looks serious. Did you know concrete is porous? Maybe it is poor quality concrete or workmanship (in the plumbing job). No doubt, it is an unwelcome surprise. Still home is sweet home...

BT, trip was good. Have no idea what happen. I cannot log into active meter in the hotel. It works again when I reach home. My house is comfortable. It is a 4 storey terrace. I wish it is big. Definitely bigger than a flat:) I feel good about it.

Hi booklover, let me share with u of my experience. Sometimes when the customers really press for a low price, some construction companies in a bid to save cost will actually use some inferior quality when it should be good quality. This is what I learnt from some of my subcontractors. That is when I realise that if the customers go away thinking they got the best deal and their request to lower the price is successful, the subcon will think of ways to minimise the cost after a big discount to customers. Therefore that is why I say in business, sometimes there is no black or white. Therefore I am pretty worry of our government policy of selecting the lowest bidder. Sometimes, it is not healthy. Some subcons in a bid to get the project will tender at quite an unreasonable low price. In the end, they collapse like L&M construction company.

You are right about selecting only the lowest bidder. One example from Reader's Digest is in a Mountaineering School, the purchaser always get quotations and buys the lowest price. The chief instructor casually asks if the purchaser like to try out rappelling down a cliff. The purchaser was happy to get a free lesson. They set off early next morning and the instructor hook up the purchaser and help lower him down the cliff. As the purchaser hangs percariously, the chief instructor shouts down to the purchaser "I want you to know the rope that is holding you is bought at the lowest price".

Thanks for sharing. You are right, hehe, actually my company also select the lowest plumbing work, but realised that plumber is not that professional. No wonder the price is so low. I wonder how he got the licensed plumber when he doesn't know the government latest regulation and I need to check PUB website and inform him. To subcons, if u want to provide the best service, be sure to know the latest regulations hor.
